Am I correct in assuming that the answer to 14 Across is
EXCUSES? The clue is "Managers (only one English) gathering to handle releases".
I assume that this is EXECS (managers) minus the second "E" , with USE (handle) in the middle, to make up EXCUSES (releases). Often this compiler stretches his clues to the limit but I hope I've seen it correctly.
