any advice on applying "split the difference"

literally - for example N/V=R

to ixion, does that mean 29a is shanNy and 26d is ameN ? ie D= 4,x= 24 , diff is (4+24)/2 = 14= N What if diff is say 3.5? go to 4 or 3?

yes - because n is halfway between d and x - all the "clashers" have a halway letter(thats forms two new words) - if not you've gone wrong - see previous thread started by me on page 5.

hi ixion, I read your prev postings. "completed" gen 82 - but count only 9 clashes - across 5H,10C,12R,13R,15E,19N,21E,23R,29N. Which one am I missing :-( ?

You're missing the b ottom right hand corner - the last letter in each word is M instead of H/R

I'm down to the last few but struggling... I'm at a loss with 14d "From the essential qualities of the case, a bloody one, involving slaughtered aunt (1,6,3)". I've got - ----R- --I

I was thinking along the lines of a Latin phrase or similar with the ending in I but can't find anything to fit so any further clues or answers would be much appreciated.

On the right track - It is a latin phrase and your letters are correct - its an anagram mostly formed by "aunt" and another word for bloody

The latin quotation is in Chambers. It might help you to know that the translation they give is "from the nature of the case"
