Can I take it from your post Bunty, that you've entered your solution online and KNOW that 16a is Ball and not Bawl?

It's such a bad clue that I've been waiting to see if anyone posts, so I can decide one way or the other.

My understanding of 23a is that Kipper is used to mean "to kipper" as a verb meaning to cure - rather than as the noun 'kipper' which wouldn't be clued merely by the word 'cure'. I hope that makes sense!

Thanks for the heads up, Bunty!

I hate clues like that, I think the crossword editor should have spotted and rejected that clue.

I'm doing okay at the moment on the prize crosswords, I won The Times Saturday prize last week and my other half won The Mephisto the week before.
