jazzgirl and others.
The answer to 8D could be the general term EDENDATE or the scientific name of the order - EDENDATA. Both words fit the grid. Which do you think is more likely?

I'd go for edentate as it's not a scientific crossword.

I did wonder what to put but decided on edentate, but I wonder if the Times would accept either. Maybe someone has submitted the xword online and could check

I would think the answer would be 'edentate' as this is a singular noun (and an adjective)
whereas 'Edentata' is surely a plural term.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I shall submit both and see what happens (although when I used to mark exams, we gave zero marks if a candidate gave two answers).
