L Short break and topless maitre d' perhaps, came back.
I have LUCRETIA. I can see the RETIA bit (wAITER backwards), but someone please explain the LUC (or CUL) bit?

K Independent left strict Jewish sect in self defence
Is it KARATE, and, if so, why (apart from the definition)?

I have no idea, chris, just thought (since my sons did/do various forms of martial arts) that I'd say AIKIDO is one which is pure self defence. I can't parse that, either!
Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas Rosalind.
Thanks, but it must start with a K (it's an alphabtical jigsaw) Sorry, I should have made that clear.

My definite letters are KA?A?E, so it's difficult to think anyhting else might work.

Thanks dtee - never heard of it.

The theme U is indeed Joyce-related. The month is a summer one, and the "witnesses" is a verb rather than noun.

Exploit (as a verb) is the definition for the other one.

Down to the last four 7's, a 6 and the z 12 of this crazy crossword. The Z is particularly troublesome and the two- part L ( I have Lea- ?i?). Also G, P and S. Any hints welcome; I've read the previous ones but no use to my addled brain.

If you know where the Z fits in, you will have the crossing letters... use the Universal crossword Solver - it's a foreign word

lea -?i? is correct - Chambers word wizard will give you this one

G - an old fashioned boys name - it has F O R D anagrammed with half a spring (think usa national park for the relevant synonym for spring- you need the 1st 3 letters)

P - dad's - the usual 3 letters + half (the 1st 4 letters ) of the usual appointments fixture - it will be on your wall and due for renewal soon!)

S - a common boys name - sorry can't think of a hint!
