Thanks again, AJT. I've now got 1 & 25ac so just need to understand what it means!

Exactly - My train of thought went - put both in the square with a diagonal, then, no you can't type that in. So I don't really know if what I have done is tight, but it seemed to work. Sorry, if this sounds too enigmatic.

Here's a hint - produced by the second cup of coffee - the words that you enter must be proper words

Thanks for the hint, AJT... I did wonder about that... also wondered if the method was to find the letter that sits halfway between the two in conflict as that would seem to fit the preamble.

Once I solve some of the clues and find a conflict, hopefully it will become a little clearer...

I thought about the halfway solution, but it didn't produce words - that's why I don't think it's a good instruction. I found Chambers Word Wizards a great help =- that's another hint.

Hmm - I went with the arithmetic mean method on the rhs of the puzzle and got 6 "clashers" to resolve - time for some backtracking!

It doesn't work with all of them though, does it? But I might be quite wrong in the way I've resolved it.

Though when I look at it again, it does work like that - but that wasn't the way I did it.

Hi AJT - I presume your manipulation gives different answers?
Does the arithmetic mean method also work for the ones I don't have on the lhs?
