Here we go again. Help needed please with 1a. Local's more lively when fisher's line becomes tense (7) I have ?E?RT?R but the answer may need alteration if I understand the preamble correctly.

Pearter, Scottish variation of perter/livelier. It was Pearler, fisher, and the 'l' swapped to a 't'.

I think I have the required 14 adjustments
For 31a I have U as the 5th letter but can't parse it into the clue?

It's good to know you are there Malone. I need help with 9d now, if you can help please. Admitting skill, woman turns up and prevents shocks (6). I have H?L??S. I would never have thought of pearler..by the way.

31 A. Song of praise with lowest note for plant (6)

The last two letters mean the lowest/first note - it's in Chambers.

The highlighting does involve diagonals, nelson. I've finished but I haven't grasped how the thematic adjustments relate to the quotation.
