One left - 3d
Stop talking on the phone? (8)

?A?L?I?E

(The I isn't certain.)
Unless I've missed something, it's a thematic clue, so doesn't have a definition. That brings me to another problem (for those who are doing this) - I can't find the sixth thematic answer through Google.

Thanks chris.

Are you doing this one? There should be another character, unless I've misinterpreted the preamble, or it contains an error.

I think I have misinterpreted - 5,13 should be included as one of the six.

You should try them, chris - they are free on line:

I'm going with your suggestion, as I've decided that it doesn't need to be thematic. Thanks.

Your letters are right, it's not thematic, and chrisg's suggestion is the only thing I can think of. Not a great clue, and not a great crossword in my view.

I agree, rogissimo. The clue part for the surname of the author is clumsy, and having got that and the obvious hidden, it was just a case of fitting the other characters (from Wikipedia) into places where they were appropriate.

I thought 5d and 15d were easy. That gave the initial letters of the theme and 18a being 5,5 so then characters slotted in thanks Mr.Google. But still stuck on 23a and 17d The answer I have for 23 I cannot parse and doesn't give 17d away to me.
Probably dead easy.

Hi tanglewood
I thought 23a was an awful clue. It requires an actual knowledge of French Arsenal footballers.

17d is much better, however. Think of other meanings of "hiding".
