Thanks, syzzie. Very nice- the usual masterful construction. I have one ?: I don't see where the B in 3A comes from.

That one bothered me too. My take:
B is "good", whereas A would be "excellent". Say, on a report card.
Do they have those anymore?

16D & 9A were well done, but I think the best were in the What column:
a, g, i, n, o.

tut-tut. i'd parsed it as (t)alk - the T from 'The', i assumed Alk was something/someone American and carried on in my merry way. what a plonker!
