Apologies I've just been away and just returned.....yes as suspected an error on my part. I saw the heading spar2 but neglected to note that sparring partner appeared directly before the definition I quoted. Sorry Elle and AB I think that's where the link is though.

I wonder if it has come about as a form of abbreviated noun from sparring partner! Not for the perfectionist though I have to agree.
