I am more than a little ashamed to own up to being stumped by a 5-letter answer to which I already have 3 letters!
Clue: Chess player with involved ending in game (5)

I thought I had the crossword finished, too and then spotted this one lurking in the bottom right-hand corner!

White...anagram of with and the end of gam(E)

Thank you so much, ChrisG. I seriously thought the"ending" referred to the ending of the word "involved", so I was trying to get a "D" in there somewhere, leaving me to find a 4-lettered game in which to insert the "D". I take it that "white " refers to the chess piece and not a proper name. I was just far too devious for my own good! Thanks a lot for saving my sanity.
