SAC (bag) backwards; HEW (fashion - not convincing); NUTS = FREAKS, as you saw.

CAP = "bonnet";TOR = "rise"?

Glad I'm not attempting this one!

Thanks very much chrise; and, yes, this one's been a real slog with some pretty tortuous clueing.

Well this was pure torture. Think I've finished but would appreciate some help with the parsing....

35a. Ring negotiator up (10) - SHOWJUMPER

I know showjumping can take place in a ring, but so can a million other things (plus they negotiate fences not rings) - UP indicates it's to do do with horses but surely there's more to it - what am I not seeing?

8d. Dame in drag, English, turned up as vicar (7) - EVERAGE (Dame in drag)

I see E(nglish) + REV (Vicar), but that leaves AGE unparsed.

12d. Yellow, like soldiers retreating from shells (4) - Is it EGGS or EGGY?

37d. Resist force when beaten, reportedly (4,1,5) - MAKE A STAND (Resist)

I think MAKE = Force, and I presume the rest is a homophone, because of the 'Reportedly', but of what?

48d. Asian equine plague described by poet's ended (6) - ONAGER (Asian equine)
