A simple one to begin with: "Put in petrol knocked down about pound essentially" = 'fuelled'. What links 'u' to pound? Thanks in advance.

I never did like the clues in the Mail, which is why I don't do their puzzle.

I think "pound essentially" is the essential, or middle, part of pound, i.e. the "U".

I hope that makes sense.

It does, Dave. I'd considered that but thought, Nah, too daft... Some more:
"Scientist creates one smell, rejects another" = 'boffin'. I'm seeing BO but that's all.

"See eye to eye with guy in Athens after backing off" = 'agree'.

"Dawn's gold and yellow seen in Argentina" = 'aurora'. Gold = AU how does the rest fit in?

"Partially converting withdrawn fertiliser" = nitre. (I know that nitre is a fertiliser...)

"Setter's taking current month" = may.

"Dominant Anglo-Saxon is unable to comprehend death" = ascendant. (I can see AS but that's all...)

nitre is written backwards in converting.

AS can't with end written inside.

The setter is the person compiling the crossword, and so will refer to himself as me, or in this case, because it is setter's, as my. Current is amps, abbreviated to a. So you have "my" taking in "a", and hence May (month)

on reflection, I have no idea why "end"=death, is to be written INSIDE the word - "can't".
Is it just a poor clue?
