How many letters for 17A?

Is the clue for 2 & 4 "I have" or are you telling us just the letter pattern without a clue? If the latter then AT PLAY will fit.

12D is probably SUSTAINING.

I thought ascribe as well but 5d clue is subtle points(8) and all I could fit in with other letters round about is Yielding. letters I had was yi???i??

I think your Y is wrong there and the answer is NICETIES.

This is really reaching, Anne. If the L in yielding, is the L in looking on the bright side anf if the true answer suggested for the other clue is NICEties, that would give us ?t ?e?? = AT BEST = look on the boight side. ?????. Pardon the convoluted thinking.
