20A: Somewhat romantic person from the Middle East (5)
The answer is obviously 'omani' (hidden in clue) but there is an obstructive 't'?
Do you think that possibly there is a misprint and the clue should read' romanic'?
Any views?

Chambers says that 'romanic' is both an adjective and a noun and means 'romance'.

quote from another forum

OMANI - I think this is supposed to be hidden [somewhat] inside 'romantic' but unfortunately the 't' prevents that from working so I suspect a flawed clue. I can't believe the setter intended us just to select the letters required without further direction.

Thank you, Jazzy for the reference!
So, Rusty and jazzy, do you both think that 'romanic' could be what was meant? or am I "barking up the wrong tree"!! (is that in your book of idioms, Rusty?)

Probably the compiler did write or type romanic, but the person transferring it to the website read it as romantic..
Watch this space.

Zzzzzzzz

Yes, Romanic makes sense unless it is an incredibly clumsy clue!
I think someone has blundered.
Yes, "barking up the wrong tree" is in my wee book.
Comes from the American "pastime" of racoon hunting.
It took place at night and the dogs often mistook the tree where the racoon was.
"Racoon" does not look right? Raccoon?

I'm glad you agree with me! I wonder if I will ever find out whether my guess at 'romanic' is what the compiler intended ?
Both racoon and raccoon are correct - two spelling versions of the word.

Really, Elle!
Well, there you go!
Raccoon looks better, I think!
