Okay, so "in ship" gives me S at the beginning and end and I can guess SHEARS or SPEARS from the other letters I have but I couldn't really say for certain which one is correct, although I'd pick SHEARS if I had to choose.

Am I missing something in "to try" that should finish off the answer for me?

Hi, yes it is SHEARS - to try as in a court case.
