Can't grasp the wordplay on this last rascal of a clue.

16a) Backing an old poet, editor stood in awe (9)

I have: M - R - E - L - D.

MARVELLED does fit the default but I only see ED for editor.

Any hints or help much appreciated

Cheers rusty. I was checking for 'an' in old language backing up + maybe a poet called Mr R Vell.

Maybe we tend to look too deep sometimes, however, I'd never heard of Marvell the poet anyway. Thanks for that. It's finished now.

Glad you are sorted, Les!

Hi Les, "To his coy mistress" probably the best known of his works was the "Lady Chatterley's Lover" of its time and divided opinion on its merits as a poem.

Here's another rascal... 35a Spectacular show lures one, time being wasted (3,2,7) I have ?o?/e?/l?m?e?e. Perhaps I've made a mistake somewhere.

Oh, of course, doh! I was expecting it to be a show (you know, obscure musical or something!) and now you've told me the answer, it's painfully obvious! Thanks Ginge!
