3D: Standard variable in working out is twice left alone(3-4-4-3)
O?E - ?I?E - ?I?S - ???
Possibly 'one-size- fits all' = standard (def)?
but if so, cannot parse the rest of the clue?

Hi elle, variable = z (as in x, y or z) + is twice = is + is.

Z + is is + left alone - anagram (out)

Variable is the Z
Is twice - the letters 'i' and 's' appear twice in the answer
Left alone - with the z and the 'is' x 2, this is anagrammed.
