Thanks for everybody's help. I agree on the answer pine marten but it surely can't be classed as a bird.
I'm curious about another answer that seems to fit but for----email is one word and it doesn't seem to refer to most of the clue

ie in mal?

this setter -
the xword compiler refers to him/herself as me.
returned - em
sick - ail
not the best clue.
