Am I having a bad day, or is this much harder than usual? I wrote in the "theme" answer at 9d, then all the SW, then...........................apart from a few in the SE and 5a I've been staring at blanks for 2 hours now!

Could anyone get me started again by giving a hint for 2d: Shorter bursts for classical speakers (7), ends in S.

(I would quite like a hint for 1a as well, but I can't give the clue without a spoiler for 9d.)

re 2 d I think it is an anagram of "shorter" which will give you word for "orators" (Greek originally)

Thanks all - never come across the word, though I suppose it's the source for "rhetoric"

Two left now - any hints for 19a, please?
Utility bill with name and energy covering front (9)
?D?E?T???

(The E might possibly be wrong - I haven't fully parsed that one)

Hi chrise, the "e" does look wrong. For front think a usually shortened military term.
