Two troublesome ones today...

New idea inn ignore d at first gets warm reception = ovation. Something to do with playing around with 'notion'??

Ireland cricket side's out, giving sly looks = L-E-I-G leering (no doubt).

I suspect the ovation one is a typo. Clue should read "inn ignored" not "inn ignore d".
The other one. LE(ERIN)G. Ireland = Erin (poetic name). Leg = side in cricket. There are two sides (of the wicket)in cricket Legside and Offside.

Typo indeed. Haven't seen one before in Mail crossword so assumed clue was ultra cryptic. No use with cricket, me...

Cricket is a very interesting game when someone explains it to you clearly and concisely.

Here is an easy explanation:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

It is said that the offside rule in football, which nobody has ever fully understood no matter how many times it has been explained to them, first came into effect at the crucial match between Silly Boy’s team and the pride of Wales, Swansea City.

Previously the law had stated that an attacking player was offside if, when the ball was passed, there were less than two - or it may be one - defenders between him and the opposing goalkeeper. And the defending players or player would be deemed 'between' the attacking player and the goalkeeper if they were level with that player.

But the attacking player was NOT offside if, despite fulfilling the criteria for being offside, he wasn't interfering with play. So nothing could be more straightforward than that.

But the FA decided that even such a simple law was too much for its unbiased and impartial referees, and so altered the 'not interfering with play' bit, so if you watch Match of the Day it will become clear to you that

'A player is NOT offside if, despite being in an offside position when the ball is played, he pulls down a defending player in the penalty box, takes a wild swing at the ball as it passes him towards goal, making the goalkeeper dive the wrong way, and is spotted being offside by the 21 other players, the 40,000 crowd, and a television audience of about 10 million viewers.
