last one 26 right- hit hard by price that drunkard suggests? Is it co(w)shed? if so how does coshed parse?

If so does this mean that 10 right has no letter added? so I can add w to 26 right.

Haven't done this no idea about part B of your question...

but...

hit hard = coshed
price, cost pronounced by a drunkard...cosht/coshed

Well done if you are finished. I'm finding this tough going, maybe the toughest guardian crossword I can recall? Have finished every Christmas special for about 30 years!
What would help me...tips for 1 down- both grids, 14 down -both grids, 10 across- both grids. Also completely at a loss with big one 9 down right - which is ?p?c???t??? Clue is Embezzlement that involved police at United Nations, - if Mr Angry Kite wants to try.

tough i agree lumen, still looking at parsing of several answers, e.g. cannot see relevance of cherry tree in either of 2 down answers

1 left think of british/american comedy act, and then add under the mistletoe

14 right another word for harbour + some gate. steep in liquid, then add extra letter

14 left not positive

hope this helps

Hi sassenach, I was so intrigued from earlier that I managed to download a copy (don't normally do the Guardian crossword). Cornel is from the genus cornus which includes the cherry tree.
