Is it just me, or does this puzzle really not hang together? Too many clues that really seem a stretch - it simply isn't fun.

I quite enjoyed it, though I think that 19d is incorrect for a "noted" rider - the spelling is just wrong.

I think it is correct in the German, although I agree with you in that it is misleading.

No it isn't - look up the name of the opera! First letter might be correct in German, but most of the rest aren't!

Think have worked out the answer from post 16 and the parse gives a spelling which is in Chambers (with the uncommon first letter) as a variant of the usual.

I'm not questioning the variant spelling - I just don't think it could be used (in English or German) for the "noted" example.
