The number are the end is the no. Of letters in the answer, so the answer is stop. Doorstop,stop watch and stop press.
1. Shield,age,marker. 5
2. Active,type,flash. 5
3.tail,eye,Croft. 4
Any help greatly appreciated, I have a couple of possibles for 2 and 3 but not happy, no idea for number 1. Many thanks

Number 1 is Dress I think if it's 'maker' instead of 'marker'

maybe 'ox'?

the last is a hamlet in somewhere or other, but not really with that one.....
