I think the answer may be idiot box (ie a television) although the exact wordplay escapes me or the clue seems incomplete ... (it's most probably me) ...

I wonder what the answer to either clue 1a or 1a is?

'box'= 'strike' ... after 'I'/one + first letters of 'often' & 'to' ?? But then the first 2 letters of the word 'idiot' are still unaccounted for...

Worked it out finally. IDIOT BOX: "one easily had" is idiot.

8 years is a very long time to work it out !
