1D should be 'upas' so 1A, clue 'Across is here' is;

I have _ _ _ _ H_R_ / _E_T Wondered if the second word was meat? I did have luncheon meat but that doesn't fit with across for 4d which sounds good. I agree with on the way down for 1ac - the clues are 'on the way down' the column

Butcher's meat sounds good - the tree will be ombu, that well-known South American spieces!!
