Of all the puzzles this weekend, I considered this one by Maskarade the most enjoyable and on a par
with the one and only Araucaria's magnificent efforts. I have finished it, but was wondering about
the parsing of two solutions, the clues for which are:-
"Male ewe, apparently" - answer RAMSON
"Fenland drainage channel surrounding open ditch"
- answer EXOGEN
Both answers refer to the theme of the puzzle and
are not further defined in the clue, so was wondering
how the rest fitted in? For instance, how does a ewe
fit into the first clue?

E is ELODEA.
Elodea- a plant
Ea -Fenland waterway
Lode - a ditch
Jolly obscure- but all in Chambers.
I am as baffled as you by RAMSON. Maybe clue should be 'Male lamb apparently'?

Thanks for coming back, Lumen. I hadn't entered EXOGEN and thanks for your more succinct solution,
which I shall gladly enter! As for Ram Junior, I have to agree that the clue may contain the wrong sex, and the closest I could think of was a tup, which as
you probably know is a CASTRATED ram!!
