hi Elle
In my Chambers edition, there is a section on "indicators" for cryptic crosswords. Maybe the 13th edition has this too ?

There's a section on cryptic crosswords titled
"A Wordgame Companion"

i wouldn't worry elle, the phrasing of the clue was designed to be misleading.
two words that are often used together in a phrase can be used to fool you.
eg 'French polish' could be languages etc rather than a wood finish.

i've never succumbed to the lure of chambers. they drop or include new words more often than i change my ...um!(answers on a postcard please). - umbrella perhaps.
i can see the need and i love new words but chambers is more a friend to the setter than the solver.
as usual, i have absolutely no evidence to back me up so i'll go and make some up just in case.
