I've got 'BASSET' as the answer

basset = dog
bet = chance but where does the 'ass' come from?
presumably it means 'dope'? but I've never heard this term?

Yes, Chris, I've obviously heard it in that context, but it says 'injecting' dope- so I thought it meant drugs?

Injecting as in placing inside?

Injecting in this case means inserting dope (ass) inside

oh right - I'll never learn all these crossword terms! is there somewhere where they are explained?

In my Chambers edition, there is a section on "indicators" for cryptic crosswords. Maybe the 13th edition has this too ?
