I've finished, but am not sure if all are correct. Warning - spoiler.
16d - hippos?
lla - tide or time?
22a - upstager?

both wrong i'm afraid.

...sorry 11a. i put tide (edit/change backwards).

Last 5 letters of 22a are correct. First letter completes an enveloping anagram.
16d: Middle 4 letters are an anagram.
11a: reversing the correct answer gives change.

I had 'tide' but couldn't parse it. My husband thought it was 'time'.
We've now parsed 16d.
I wasn't aware of the connection between 'gay' and the answer to 22a, but have now managed to parse the anagram of 'grace' and something meaning 'amazing'.
Really have finished now! :)

Wasn't this an absolutely gorgeous puzzle. It quite distracted me from both the TdF and Hoylake.
