I'd thought of 'stanhopes' but couldn't parse the clue - and I still can't get it to work.

I have stanhopes and thought it was stan(d) for park, and hopes are enclosures. But I cannot solve 1a: a poet's cloak remains on mother'sback (6) but Some answers are not the length of the grid entries I see. Can anyone shed any light here? I have ?m????
