I thought this was 'Pieces' = (p)ARTS (quietly forgotten), and 'Previous' = FORM(er), but I don't see any instruction to get rid of the ER in 'Former'?

37d. Fish head added to Greek dish oddly overlooked (3,7) - RED SNAPPER (Fish)

If 'Head' = PER, and gReEk DiSh (Oddly overlooked), then I'm still left with NAP unparsed?

18d. Solid cloud seen at first over Island (8) - CONCRETE (Solid)

This looks like C(loud) + ON + CRETE (Island) but where does the 'ON' come from?

42a. Backing what stops awkward situation? - ?E?I?D There are only about 15 words that fit this pattern and I can't make a case for any of them!

42 Behind. 'Eh' = what (pardon?) and Bind is an awkward situation. B eh ind.

37. I think 'Napper' can mean 'head'.

18. I've seen 'on' being 'over' before, but I'm struggling to come up with an example! (They were having a row on costs, they were having a row over costs.)

Could "form" be "previous" in police/court jargon?
