Allying

confederate = ally

at home = in
middle of night = g

must be ALLYING.

Allying = Joining
confederate = ally
at home = in
midnight = g (middle letter of night)

When giving an answer should you also give an explanation?
Perhaps you shouldn't, to give the poster a chance to work it out themself. They can always ask for an explanation if they can't.
More often than not, when you can see the answer the explanation is fairly obvious.
Do the great and the good have a view on this.

I see your point, sometimes I do and sometimes not. No clear view either way.
