I assume that all the dm.s today have the order of numbers and clues all out of synch as it were. I have been wading away at it and I think that I have it virtually solved. The only problem is 5a, basque accountants brought over two diamonds, I have b?d?c? and I think the answer is bodice.

basque=bodice

accountant's brought over = b/o + d + ice for two diamonds.

Thank you andyc and mamya, I am glad that I had bodice as I could not quite justify it. Off to study the horses now, should be easier to todays crossword.

This clue - " Basque accountant's brought over two diamonds" (7) still has me bemused! I can see that a bodice is a basque but can't see totally how this obtained. Diamonds = ICE (I get this). Is the BO from BROUGHT OVER (first letters) and the D from TWO? Bet I will feel stupid when you or someone else explains! Cheers.

B/O is simply an abbreviation - just like PTO or C/F (carried forward)

One diamond - D
Another - ICE

Sorry mamya - had seen your explanation and thought my response would come after your reply. I can see (now I have thought about it a bit more) where DICE comes from The D - diamond and ICE - diamond, hence two diamonds! BUT if the BO is from first letters of "brought over", where does the accountant come in?? Think I am suffering from sunstroke - been a lovely day here in Wales.

B/O is simply an abbreviation used in Bookkeeping by an Accountant to mean the balance Brought Over.

Gosh - DO feel stupid now! Thank you for your patience. I have found today's crossword really challenging! Has there been some incorrect numbering of clues as suggested? Still have a few to solve.
