1st letter may be M from 22a Make it easier to bear to go to work? (7) I had C???U?E so thought commute fits, but I can't oarse it???

Commute also means - soften, alleviate, decrease etc...easier to bear

23 Is an Island

I had an answer for 23d from red bradfords but just realised how it parses!!

Confused myself as the answer to 5d is also an island, but then threw it off the list as it had a definition

Stuck on 5d ' Amphitheatre seating in present times needs protection of beam' (6) *R***N

Beam in the sense of smile, around this era. Slightly technical term defined.

I'm amazed nobody seems to bre having trouble today. My worst corner is the top left. 9AC-- Heard from one who's resigned from rustic dance house? (3-2) No letters yet. Then 11AC -- Made ornamental horse sound on eating too much (9). I just have a D at the end. 2DN-- Recurring action of mouse with no tail put in clay moulding (8). Again i have no letters. Not all i'm missing but let's start there.
