"Avon's star, seen from rightangle" (4).
I've got 'G ? ? A', and these letters seem confirmed.
I would have expected 'NOVA', but can't have it!
Any ideas? 'GAGA' is a star, but I can't parse it/her.

Another one is "Stern bit of water travel" (3) 'S ? I' .
'SKI' is all I can think of, but why?
I'm going gaga myself over this.

It seems the solution in the paper gave GAGA as the answer and few if any are any the wiser - NOVA is the obvious answer, but....

Thank you, Mamya. It's all very unsatisfactory, so I'll have to try to turn what's left of my mind to other things. Best wishes.

Maybe when you water-ski you are at the stern of the boat

Jazzgirl. Thanks for the suggestion about 'ski'. It's what I regard as a flaccid clue - it seems to lack the crispness and wit that give enjoyment with most crosswords - but I'm becoming an old curmudgeon.
