AJT Did you get a prize for the bumper Auracaria and did you work out the letters and the numbers?

The prize I got this week wa for Mephisto 2573 (not the prize yet, just a card to say I was one of the winners). No, I didn't win the Araucaria Christmas one - I haven't seen the list of winners. I did complete it and enter, but without paying any attention to the numbers and letters. I have seen an explanation for these in these columns, but I've forgotten what it was. I think it was to do with the century in which the subject lived. If I can find out more from the Guardian Xword page I'll let you know.

was this the Gladstone thing?

I've fund the solution on the Guardian webpage, and the explanation is - centenaries this year - the number is of course how many, and a = accession, b = born, and d = died.

Absolutely! One of life's joys is to find that the Saturday Guardian xword is one of his - and particullarly if it's one of his alphabet puzzles - nothing else gets done until it's finished (hopefully finished!) Do you do his Genius xwords on the Duardian web page?
