A bit easier today, but 37a "Follower of four abandoned ideas for flier" Think it must be PLANE...if so, can anyone explain? Sure it is obvious!!!!

I saw this earlier as Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, Plan D... Plan E, plane/flier.

Must be mega-thick, still don't understand this!

Sorry, I should have been clearer...
'Ideas' are plans. If Plan A doesn't work, you move on to Plan B. 'Four abandoned ideas' mean that Plans A, B, C and D haven't worked - so you need Plan E.

Yes .... but hang on! I'd got "Assissi" for 32d, and could pretty well support it. Obviously not, if 37a is "plane"! So, what about 32d "framework of church on birthplace of saint unfinished". And what about 31a "diamonds taken by European criminals, resulting in legal cases for those charged"?
