Or maybe elite? I can't see what either have to do with self-centredness, unless it is me reversed at the beginning of Emile. I don't like this crossword.

I assumed you saw how emile fits cryptically, the mile being a race in athletics ( now replaced by the 1500m but still raced occasionally)
