There I was, happily doing today's Prize Crossword (by Brummie), when I came to this clue

Desirable girls generally try to put out - time for resistance? (5)

Seems more appropriate for Viz or Private Eye - how did it get past the Crossword Editor?

Well - "Brummie" is the pseudonym of a setter named Eddie James - who is also known as "Cyclops" when he sets for Private Eye.

His clues in Private Eye can be very rude (but funny IMHO) and this "humour" occasionally spills over to his Guardian crosswords.

Interesting insider information but I don't have the answer. Is it as rude as the question?

Replace the R in "try to" by T, then anagram it.

Sometimes these clues make you think...tut! I am not a prude only joking.

The other day one used 'piece' as synonym for 'girl' - as in ' a piece of skirt', well I ask you !!

Honestly I don't think it is prudishness to disapprove of this one, mamya - the word is disrespectful, categorising girls only in terms of their sexual desirability (an availability?).

I hoped that the Guardian, at least, had higher standards than that.

Oh believe me, I am not disagreeing with you - it is also lazy cluing too.

I sometimes think the older I get and the more I see, a certain kind of 'surprise fatigue' sets in.

I had to look it up-- had never heard it before. Guess it's not in my Canadian lexicon. Said it could be used for attractive young male or female. Do you agree?
