Even with help already given, I still don't have a clue about the reference to 'next' in the across clues. Can anyone spell it out for me?
Thank you

Do you mean musical scale or scale relating to size? Sorry to be so dim.

Sorry Christine - I was trying to be obscure.

Each of the "nexts" refers to two octaves (do-re-mi etc.), which are included in the solution.
Watch out - one solution includes two of them

Thank you. I still can't see how it helps most of the clues but at least it's a start I suppose.

stuck on my last one: 24a "Disposed of next beast" (5)

I've got -I-0- and can only think of TIGON but seems pretty tenuous

Any help appreciated

It includes one of the sequence. I think your order has gone awry.

Scribbler: your letters are correct, but it is the 3rd & 4th letters that form the note. Outside is a word meaning "to dispose of", giving a word for a type of beast. I'm not very happy with this clue, quite honestly.
