Something's obviously wrong with the normal web page for this crossword.

But you can get it from here in PDF format:

http://static.guim.co.uk/crosswords/pdfs/gdn.cryptic.20130907.pdf

It's an Araucaria "alphabetical" - always a pleasure to see but hopefully even more so if it was set recently.

The usual crap: "this page is not available" for all the G links.
Not the only puzzle on this site with this type of problem. It never ends.
The Guardian needs to get a new programmer.
If I were in England, I'd hunt that bastard down.

Thanks to rh142 for posting a usable link.

Well that went in quite easily, but was I just lucky with my guess of which clue to put across the top? If I had chosen the other one, would it have come unstuck somewhere (given that "there is only one correct solution")?

btw is the "Eastern" needed in the "C" clue? I think it gives an E more than required.

Thank you for the link RH. How did you find that?

chrise: like you, either I got lucky or I can't understand why there is only one correct solution. The perfect symmetry suggests to me that there should be two. Or am I missing something?

Re C: I think you do need the e of eastern. The first part of the clue gives the first four letters only.

Hi rogissimo
Don't you get the E from the last letter of the second word?

Some time ago I didn’t have time to do the crossword interactively so I clicked on the PDF link and printed it. I noticed the PDF page had a URL of the form:

http://static.guim.co.uk/crosswords/pdfs/gdn.cryptic.nnnnnnnn.pdf

where “nnnnnnnn” is a unique number for each crossword that increases by 1 for each puzzle.

Often I’ve found if the interactive puzzle is not available then the PDF one is. In this case I “looked at” the PDF for Paul’s Friday puzzle and found:

http://static.guim.co.uk/crosswords/pdfs/gdn.cryptic.20130906.pdf

So I changed the last 6 to a 7 – and hey presto there it was.

Chrise & rogissimo

The reason there is only one correct solution whereas the answers could fit in two ways is surely given by a piece of typical Araucarian brilliance in the clue to “T” – “where [it (ie theanswer) is] to be displayed.”

Of course, rh 142 - and it means I have the wrong answer! Oh well, I'm not going to bother to re-do it, as I never send them in anyway.
