Grid filled in but still not sure what to highlight - am I looking for two more of a certain suit? Are they hidden in the grid? Feel I may be overthinking the whole thing.

You're not looking for two more words - all you need to do is highlight two of the unclued entries. They have something in common - something mentioned in the first line of your post!

Please help me put this baby to bed. I have finished the grid except for 1a. (what is it?). I have the pair. I do not understand the connection of the unclued lights to 42/27. Thanks David

the unclued lights are a peat SPADE, a DIAMOND...
2 of them are HEARTS - a doubleton in a hand of cards so they are the 2 you need to shade

Thanks sudokulover. (I think you've come to my rescue once before!). I had 27d as top rather than ton which caused all my problems.
