Need an explanation, please!

15A Log first axed in middle of America (7)
E_T_R
I assume it's ENTER
Log = definition
middle of America = amERica? But it's not the exact middle and then what's NTE?

Otherwise all OK. Does anyone else find that as they type in a clue that's been foxing them, the answer becomes clear? Just happened to me twice, but I still can't see this one.

The 'middle' in America would be Center - the first is axed, dropped and you have Enter/log.

Hi All
I am puzzled by 1ac
Find views of university in excellent books. (5,3)
I think it must be SOUND OUT. Def. "Find views", and I have U(niversity) in OT (books), but that leaves "sound" = "excellent". Does this make sense?

Thanks jazzy
I would have thought that "excellent" was a rather higher quality than "sound", but that must what the compiler was thinking of. be

Chambers actually lists 'excellent' as one meaning of 'sound' (albeit it says 'informal').
