Chris, if you're still there, I remember my old friend (now deceased) who was a very rigorous crossword buff, arguing fiercely that words like VTOL are NOT 4-letter words (4), but should be (1,1,1,1). Have you ever heard this argued?

Hi Jolan - Trust you are well. I haven't heard it argued before but I agree with your old friend. VTOL is usually in capitals so I cant see how it could be a four letter word...but, as usual, the English language continues to evolve !

Yep Chris. I'm doing fine. Enjoying a break from 5@5. The rain's just started here in N. Wales. I remember my friend arguing about this very word. He's ask, "How do you pronounce this word?" He'd go on, telling me (as if I didn't know), "VTOL means Vertical Take Off and Landing, so it cannot be a 4-letter word". I'd give in at this stage.

Not using any rules, but in my head an acronym only works if you can say it......

eg BAFTA

but not if you have to use the letters....

eg BBC

It always amuses me that it takes longer to say "www" than "WORLD WIDE WEB"!
