In the £100 prize crossword in the Saga magazine for June, the clue for 26 across was "Enough Shakespeare!" (5). I puzzled over it for two months without success. In the August issue, just published, the answer is given as "Basta." OK, "basta" is Italian for "enough," but I still don't see what that has to do with Shakespeare. Can anyone enlighten me?

Well other than the fact he did use it, notably in The Taming of the Shrew, I can see nothing else.

Hopefully someone else can.

Chambers gives the definition of 'basta' as '(Shakespeare),interjection, enough [Italian and Sp}.

Yes, that must be it. Thank you. Although I can't help thinking that he used most words in the dictionary at some point.
