Are you sure of the 'f'?
Silver would fit the clue, Long John Silver being the pirate, and silver being money.

can't think of anything that would fit?

'Act or dance' could be MEASURE, which would fit with the S

(As in take measures to achieve something = act, and the old usage to tread a measure = dance)

Which Herald crossword is this? I've noticed for a few weeks that the Herald crosswords asked about here are different from the ones that appear in my (Glasgow) Herald.
