40 across. Game with 3 Balls

I can only find billiards to fit! Which does not make sense to me Can you help

In what way doesn't it make sense? Billiards is played with three balls - a red, and two white, one with a spot on it (the two players hit the different white balls when it is their turn)

You are thinking of snooker, rather than billiards. In fact there are sixteen in snooker, counting the white.
