Number of words unknown, clue: Split with cold hesitation.

Do you know the purpose of the clues. Is it book names, literary characters,...? Can you give an example of a clue already answered?

Reluctant to give answers to quizzes, but....

Thank you everyone for your suggestions I have just had an email from my friend in NSW to say his answer was incorrect as it should have been the title of a book. He did not however say what the answer was, I will post when I find out.
