I was rather hoping not to have to get help with this, but I have no idea, so I think it might be a latin name?#
37d Mendicant offers to conserve rook, and some Aussie species (10) _R_A_B_R_S
Presumably rook=R, and could the definition be mendicant, or species? Stuck, I'm afraid.

So mendicants rely on donations, thus the friars... I was looking for something more like beggar, and rook is bird, not as in chess...still, had never heard of friarbirds.

I think it's mendicant = friar, offers = bids, which 'conserves' r as shorthand for rook in chess. I did a search on friarbirds - indeed an Australian species. One lives and learns!

Friarbirds have a bald head, hence the name, also known as "leatherheads". I've lived in Oz for over fifty years and don't think I've ever seen one.
